This article explores children’s picturebooks about death and grieving by considering both psychological and literary aspects. Two questions frame this analysis: How can picturebooks, particularly written for young children, support children’s grief when someone dies? How do the illustrations and text of picture books express and convey the aesthetic and emotional experience of loss? Using both psychological research on children’s grief reactions and literary analysis of picturebooks, this paper reviews picturebooks that have been published on the topic of death from 2001 to 2011 and then closely analyzes three books that span a range of topics and approaches to death. Findings indicate that children’s picturebooks convey important psychological and cultural issues through text and illustrations. Furthermore, understanding some of the psychological and literary features of children’s picturebooks that address death and grieving can help educators to provide support and understanding for children when they experience loss. 相似文献

The present study investigated some of the major dimensions of intercultural effectiveness. Based upon a review of the literature, 24 “abilities” thought to be important for intercultural effectiveness were generated. Fifty-three subjects who had reported functioning effectively in other cultures rated these abilities in terms of their importance in facilitating intercultural effectiveness. Factor analysis of the data yielded three dimensions of intercultural effectiveness: (1) the ability to deal with psychological stress; (2) the ability to communicate effectively; and (3) the ability to establish interpersonal relationships. The demand-pull theory of invention and innovation has drawn much of its support from the work of Jacob Schmookler on patent time series. In this work, Schmookler found no evidence that scientific discoveries or major inventions had provided the stimulus for important inventions. However, it is argued here that his method was not well designed to detect such effects.Any effect of a particular scientific or technological development is likely to occur in a rather narrow area of technology, so that detection of science-push and technology-push will be favoured by the examination of narrow areas of inventive activity. Manufacturing processes for groups of chemical products subject to similar demand-side factors provide convenient such areas.In this study time series of patents on processes for eight intermediates for synthetic fibres have been examined. They are not consistent with a simple demand-pull theory, but rather with the view that inventive activity is affected both by demand and by technological opportunity. Two of the intermediates have been examined in detail, and evidence has been presented that in one case a major invention arose from science-push and in the other one arose from technology-push. 相似文献

A poetry workshop can present opportunities to integrate students' knowledge and perspectives in classroom contexts, encouraging the use of language for expression, communication, learning and even empowerment. This paper describes how adolescent students respond to a poetry workshop in an English classroom centred on teaching writing that is based on their knowledge from their various life experiences and understanding of events beyond the classroom. Informed by New Literacy Studies and third space theories, ethnographic methods of participant observation were used to document an eighth‐grade urban public school classroom where a community member implemented a weekly programme using music lyrics and poetry for an entire school year. Findings illustrate how the poetry workshop encouraged students to contribute to the classroom learning context and engage critically with ideas that were relevant to their lives. Collaborating with a community member and tapping in to the powerful ways of using language to communicate led to important learning opportunities for students in this classroom. Poetic devices such as rhyme, rhythm, metaphor and wordplay enhanced and supported students' own language practices; students used these sophisticated writing strategies as they worked to convey their ideas, experiences and opinions. 相似文献

This paper provides a critical policy analysis and network ethnography of Teach for Bangladesh (TfB). We demonstrate that TfB is a localised version of a global teacher education policy – Teach for All/America (TfAll/A). Santos, Boaventura De Sousa [2002. The Processes of Globalisation. Translated by Sheena Caldmell. Eurozine: Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais and Eurozine, August, 1–48] has written about the ways some national policies travel globally. He calls these ‘globalised localisms’. When they touch down and are taken up in another national context, he calls this a ‘localised globalism’. We see TfB as a ‘localised globalism’. This paper is focused on documenting and analysing the policy network that has enabled a globalised localism, TfAll/A, to be taken up as a localised globalism in Bangladesh through TfB. We see this as the emergence of network governance in a developing world primary schooling context. The analysis shows how pivotal to TfB is the boundary spanning networking of its founder, who connects the global to the local, the private to the public, and the provision of social services to philanthropy. 相似文献

Research has indicated that disabled and nondisabled persons experience communication strained by high levels of uncertainty for both communicators. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of being disabled on the academic progress of disabled college students. It was felt that academic success will be contingent upon positive communication with faculty, fellow students, and university personnel. A questionnaire assessing the campus' social climate, the quality of its programs and instruction, and the students' academic and career expectations was administered to 100 disabled students. Analyses of the data revealed that the disabled students' motivation was significantly related to their level of social alienation, while the students' perceived competence was most related to their level of social adjustment. The theoretical implications of these findings and avenues for future research are discussed. 相似文献

and how their children’s school experiences affect their interactions and investment in a place. The questions this research
asks is: How do mothers define and describe their neighborhood? What role does the school play as mothers navigate their children’s
experiences in the community? Findings indicate that the way that families conceptualize and manage their context indicates

The causes of students’ academic dishonesty behavior were explored using survey and experimental vignette methods. Participants
were surveyed about their own cheating behavior, neutralizing attitudes, performance/mastery orientation and perceptions of
peer attitudes and behavior. As predicted, neutralizing attitudes influenced cheating behavior directly, but also indirectly,
increasing the effect of individual attitudes. Observing others cheating was strongly correlated with one’s own cheating behavior.
These variables are also shown to have different effects on exam cheating and plagiarism and cases of giving and receiving
unauthorized information. Correlations were tested using experimental vignette methods, which supported the claims made from
